The 6 all-time greatest El Clasico goalscorers

When Barcelona and Real Madrid face off in the Copa del Rey second leg next week, all eyes will be on their respective goalscorer-supremes, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Yet the latter doesn't make the list of the top six greatest ever El Clasico goalscorers. With 10 goals against Barcelona, you would assume that Ronaldo will one day make the list if he stays in Madrid. As for Messi, where does he rank amongst the all-time El Clasico goal-getters?

Joint Fourth: Ferenc Puskas - Real Madrid: 14 goals

If you think that Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi’s feat of scoring more goals than they play games in a season, is something new, then think again.

Ferenc Puskas enjoyed similar seasons and scored 242 goals in 262 games during his time with Real Madrid. These included two hat-tricks against Barcelona.

Joint Fourth: Francisco Gento - Real Madrid: 14 goals

As an outside-left in Madrid’s famous team of the fifties and sixties, Francisco Gento scored 176 goals for Real Madrid. He reserved roughly 8% of those goals for Barcelona.

Gento was a key-figure during a tremendously successful period at the club. He won 12 league titles and is the only player to have won the European Cup six times.

Joint Fourth: Cesar Rodriguez - Barcelona: 14 goals

Cesar Rodriguez was Barcelona’s all-time record goalscorer with 232 goals in 351 games, until his tally was beaten by a certain Lionel Messi last season.

14 of these goals came against Real Madrid. Rodriguez helped Barcelona to five La Liga titles in his time at the club.

Third: Raul - Real Madrid: 15 goals

Aside from the trifling matter of scoring 323 goals in 741 games for Real Madrid, Raul is a club legend for two reasons. The first is the fact that he only joined Real Madrid as a youngster, due to the decision by Jesus Gil to close the Atletico Madrid academy, where Raul was playing at the time.

The second reason is that Raul scored lots of goals against Barcelona. Here's some of his best.

Second: Messi - Barcelona: 17 goals

In 23 games against Real Madrid, Lionel Messi has scored 17 goals and it surely won’t be long before he secures the title as El Clasico’s record goalscorer.

Messi’s most memorable performance against Real Madrid, was arguably his first El Clasico at the Nou Camp. The then 19-year old scored a hat-trick in a thrilling 3-3 draw.

First: Alfredo Di Stefano - Real Madrid: 18 goals

Until Messi overtakes him, the record for the all-time leading El Clasico goalscorer, is held by Alfredo Di Stefano. Di Stefano scored 18 times against Barcelona.

This was all the more painful for Barca fans due to the fact that Di Stefano was meant to have signed for them. Barcelona looked to have secured a deal to have signed the player, but when it hit problems over Di Stefano’s ownership rights, Real Madrid stole in and secured the deal.
